Closing the Gap on the Nation’s Rheumatologist Shortage

Many of us know thataccess to careisn’t always a guarantee. All too often, seeing a rheumatologist includes traveling out of state because of the severe rheumatologist shortage. Last year we committed to closing this gap by offering Fellowship grants to universities in underserved areas. Three adult and two pediatric rheumatology fellowships have been offered and accepted by the follow programs:

Adult Fellowship Programs

University of Washington (UW),Seattle, WA

UW provides regional support for 5 states. They also work with underserved native Americans. UW has a history of excellence in academic training, with strong interactions between the adult and pediatric programs.

University of California, San Francisco (UCSF),San Francisco, CA

The UCSF rheumatology program is recognized globally and serves more than 6,000 patients with arthritis conditions per year.

University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB),Birmingham, AL

Doctors at UAB help their community in a number of ways, including pilot programs in telecare, disease specific clinics, and a clinic for uninsured patients.

Pediatric Fellowship Programs

Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health (IUH),Indianapolis, IN

Both the adult and pediatric IUH programs have a track record of success in a rural area with diverse population.

David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA,Los Angeles, CA

This important pediatric program has strong academic and clinical training. Doctors at UCLA care for a diverse urban population that includes large immigrant and Spanish-speaking populations.
